2017

  • Prof. Sasmito visited and gave seminar entitled Use of renewable energy sources for mine energy system at IROAST of Kumamoto University hosted by Prof. Sainoki. An MoU was signed between Mine Multiphysics lab at McGill and Sainoki’s lab of IROAST for potential collaboration in geothermal energy system. Prof Sasmito also visited Tokyo Institute of Technology hosted by Prof. M. Aziz in October 2017.
  • Prof. Sasmito attended MEMO 2017 conference in Saskatoon, September 2017. He chaired a session on Innovation, Aurelien presented a paper on selective artificial ground freezing.
  • Prof Sasmito attended 9th International Conference on Applied Energy in Cardiff UK. He presented a paper on coil heat and mass transfer and chaired two sessions on thermal energy storage; Mahmoud presented two papers on ground freezing and ground-coupled seasonal thermal storage; and Prof. Madiseh presented our join paper on rock-pit mine heating and cooling.
  • Prof Sasmito attended the 16 North American Mine Ventilation Symposium in Golden, Colorado in June 2017. Saad presented two papers, ie duct leakage and spray freezing, while Prof Madiseh presented our paper on rock-pit energy storage. The next 17th North American Mine Ventilation Symposium in 2019 will be hosted by McGill in Montreal. Prof Sasmito will co-chair the conference together with Dr Stachulak, Profs Hassani and Madiseh.
  • Saad presented his research work on spray freezing and ground coupled seasonal energy storage in 2017 ASME Power & Energy Conference in Charlotte, NC.
  • Prof Sasmito chaired a session on Energy & Mines in CIM Convention 2017 together with Prof Madiseh of UBC in May 2017. Mahmoud presented his research on freezing-on-demand, Aurelien preseted a poster on selective ground freezing while Matthew and Saad presented a poster duct leakage.

2016

  • Prof Sasmito presented two papers, chaired a session and participated in a panel discussion “The Future of Design + Energy” in 8th International Conference on Applied Energy in Beijing China, October 2016. He also visited and gave lectures in China University of Mining and Technology Beijing (hosted by Prof. B Nie), China Jiliang University in Hangzhou (hosted by Prof. P Xu) and Shandong University of Science and Technology in Qingdao (hosted by Dr L Jiang). An agreement for research collaboration with State Key Laboratory of Mining Disaster Prevention and Control of SDUST was initiated.
  • Prof Sasmito presents a paper in 15th World Renewable Energy Congress in Jakarta Indonesia in September 2016.
  • Prof Sasmito chairs a session in 3rd International Symposium on Mine Safety Science and Engineering (ISMS) in Montreal August 2016. He is the Technical Stream Chair for Coal stream. In addition, Saad presents a paper on modeling of methane and dust control in this conference.
  • Mahmoud Alzoubi and Saad Akhtar passed their PhD proposal defense in December 2015 and July 2016, respectively. Congratulations and keep up the good work!.
  • Prof Sasmito chairs Energy Management session in CIM Convention Vancouver 2016 in May 2016.

2015

  • Congratulations to Eric Gaudreau who won the Best Poster Award in CIM Conference 2015. His poster entitled “Modeling of the natural heat exchanger at Creighton mine to increase the cooling capacity” received significant attention in the conference. Keep up the good work Eric!
  • Welcome to Bhargav Bharathan for joining MVE as a MEng candidate. He will be working on slurry pipeline transport for materials handling in mines. He also presented a paper entitled “Review and analysis of energy consumptions and carbon emission in underground haulage” at the CIM Conference 2015 which stemmed from graduate course MIME 624D1: Materials Handling in Mines.
  • Prof Sasmito is joining editorial team of CIM Journal as Peer Review Co-Chair (Subject Editor) for Maintenance Engineering & Reliability. He will contribute in managing and improving journal quality.
  • Three papers have been accepted for presentations in International Conference on Applied Energy 2015 in Abu Dhabi. Prof Sasmito is planing to attend the conference.
  • Welcome to Mahmoud AlZoubi and Aurelien Nie-Rouquette for joining  MVE as a PhD and MEng candidate, respectively. They will work on underground freezing project supported by ultra-deep mining network.
  • Congratulations to Darryel Boucher and Joshua Sovechles for acceptance of their papers in Computational Modeling in Minerals Processing Conference 2015.
  • Prof. Sasmito is teaching MIME 333 Materials Handling course in winter 2015 along with MIME 624 Materials Handling in Mines course for graduate level.

2014
